Certified Trauma Specialist in Nutrition and Integrated Care

Training Description

This course will help therapists and clinicians to utilize principles of nutritional psychology, the mind-body connection, circadian rhythms and the role of digestion as part of holistic emotional regulation when working with trauma clients. Participants will gain knowledge of how imprints from trauma can trigger widespread physiological changes such as neuroinflammation, blood sugar imbalance, increased gastric permeability and ultimately creating dysregulation in the nervous system and unstable moods. The course will also explore how to assess using worksheets, subjective journaling as well as functional lab testing clients who are experiencing nutritional deficits. Therapeutic interventions such as elimination diets, chrononutrition, sleep and rhythm hygiene, recovery and rituals will be explored in order for the clinician to create an integrative care plan.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to identify physiological imbalance such as oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, blood sugar imbalances as it pertains to trauma.
  2. Participants will identify common disruption of circadian rhythms (sleep hygiene, disordered eating, fatigue) and implement appropriate lifestyle interventions.
  3. Participants will learn and incorporate chrono nutritional solutions in their integrative care plans.
  4. Participants will identify how chronic toxic stress can trigger nutrient deficiencies, immune system dysfunction and dysfunction in the digestive tract.
  5. Participants will learn symptoms of high cortisol and how to restore balance using nutrition.
  6. Participants will explore superfoods for mental health and incorporate into integrative care planning.

CE Credits

Credits listed below are for full attendance of the live training.  Attendees will sign in upon arrival and after lunch.  At the end of the training, attendees will be given an evaluation to complete.  After completing the evaluation attendees will receive a certificate of completion for the training.

Arizona Trauma Institute does not issue partial certificates of completion.

Presenter – Vanessa Ruiz, ND, RN-BSN

Vanessa Ruiz, ND, RN-BSN, is a Naturopathic physician and registered nurse. She utilizes natural therapies such as biofeedback, somatic therapies, nutrition and botanical medicines in an integrative setting for behavioral health and medical conditions at Integrative Mental Health Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. She earned her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine at Southwest College in Tempe, Arizona, and her nursing degree from Stony Brook University, New York. 

She has been featured in the “Dig Deep Documentary” and “Voyage Phoenix” for her work with trauma and natural mental health.  She speaks nationally on the effect of adverse childhood experiences and how to approach them from a holistic perspective. She has also been a practicing nurse for over 10 years, in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and global health. She is the founder of Nurses for Natural Health, an organization dedicated to educating and empowering nurses in natural health.
