Course Description

Because this is skill-based class it will only be offered live there will be no webinar or broadcast of the training.  It is highly interactive and will focus on development of skills through In-vivo practice.

The cost is $379 per person (which includes 6 (90-minute) coaching sessions to support implementation.

The SAF-NET is designed to reinforce competency, assets, resources and strengths.  This is a non-pathological approach that focuses on the building of capacity and resilience.  SAF-NET recognizes that we have to work with the body and sensory system as well as cognition, self-awareness and Self-reflection. Remember that one’s reality is a created experience. One’s perceptions or attributions about the world in which their lives unfold is a construct (schema) that has been crafted through time by environmental experience and the beliefs, expectations and valuing that is placed on the environmental elements.  No two people share the same perception completely.

Learning objective:

  1. Enhance Structure in life. 
  • Routine and predictability are necessary to move forward.
  • Chaos and instability interfere with goals and movement forward.

2. Build Social support.

  • Secure or strongly attached in health relationships (intimate and friendship based)
  • Knowing how to access the social support at need.
  • Actually, acting to access the social support when needed.

3. Build habituated Coping strategies.

  • Strategies to manage sensory and somatic overwhelm.
  • Grit factor, the ability to endure distress to obtain an outcome.
  • Life meaning.
  1. Learn and use the six basic strategies of SAF-NET.
    • Distraction
    • Partitioning
    • Progression
    • Suggestion
    • Reorientation
    • Utilization

5. Learn to recognize limiting injunctions and navigate them without confrontation.

Day 1

  • Review the physiology and science of trauma.
  • Focus on movement through and actions taken.
  • Salutogenic thinking.
  • Case study discussion
  • Walking between Cognitive behavioral and Emotional approaches

Day 2

  • Identifying injunctions
  • Belief systems that have become procedural memory.
  • The structure of questions that require brain integration.
  • Don’t use the traditional Neo-cortex centric or Amygdala Centric thinking.

Day 3

  • Model the process with a volunteer.
  • Practice skill in small groups 2-3 per group
  • How to use a developmental timeline for trauma
  • How to use the timeline to promote capacity.

Credits listed below are for full attendance of the live training.  Attendees will sign in upon arrival and after lunch.  At the end of the training, attendees will be given an evaluation to complete.  After completing the evaluation attendees will receive a certificate of completion for the training.

Arizona Trauma Institute does not issue partial certificates of completion.

Training Presenter – Robert Rhoton, PsyD, LPC, F.A.A.E.T.S.

Dr. Robert Rhoton, CEO of Arizona Trauma Institute and President at the Trauma Institute International possesses a rich history of experience in the mental health field. Dr. Rhoton has supervised multiple outpatient clinics, juvenile justice programs, and intensive outpatient substance abuse programs for adolescents, day treatment programs for youth and children, adult offender programs and child and family therapeutic services. Dr. Rhoton served as president of the Arizona Trauma Therapy Network from 2010 through 2012. Dr. Rhoton was a Professor at Ottawa University in the Behavioral Sciences and Counseling Department whose primary interests were training counselors to work with traumagenic family dynamics, child and family trauma, and non-egoic models of treatment. Dr. Rhoton is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and collaborates and consults with numerous Arizona agencies fine tuning their understanding of trauma and the impact of developmental trauma on the individual and family. Dr. Rhoton works internationally with organizations to improve the delivery of trauma treatment services.
