Functional medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease. While Complex trauma usually occurs because of repeated traumatic experiences, toxic stress, and repetitive adversity by a child or young person, although it can also occur as a result of experiences as an adult. Some people experience trauma across their lives. This course examines the interplay between trauma and physical, emotional and psychological health as well as how to structure the treatment to speed recovery from trauma.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will explore naturopathic medicine as it relates to a salutogenic approach.
  • Participants will look at functional approaches to addressing trauma.
  • Participants will seek to develop an understanding of hormonal and biochemical activity in the brain and nervous system.
  • Participants will be able to identify factors to improve treatment outcomes for dissociative clients.
  • Participants will gain a clearer understanding of dissociative disorders.
  • Participants will learn how to identify dissociation and prepare clients for treatment.
  • Participants will learn about different assessment measures to identify dissociation.
  • Participants will learn approaches to work with dissociative disorders and clients with dissociation.
  • Participants will be able to identify several factors that contribute to dissociation.
  • Participants will be able to articulate the differences between simple and complex trauma and identify the distinct challenges for diagnosis, treatment planning, stabilization and treatment of complex trauma.
  • Understand the neurobiology of complex trauma and how chronic exposure to threatening environments can produce the spectrum of symptoms of complex trauma.
  • Participants will seek to examine the interplay between trauma and physical, emotional, and psychological health as well as how to structure the treatment to speed recovery from trauma.
